This week, Danya Perry was appointed as a CJA Panelist for the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. In this role, Danya will serve as appointed defense counsel to ensure that criminal defendants receive excellent representation and every constitutional protection afforded to them. CJA panelists are among the most prominent, experienced, and capable attorneys in New York.
Congress passed the Criminal Justice Act in 1964 to establish a system that ensures criminal defendants are provided appointed counsel as guaranteed by the Sixth Amendment. The CJA seeks “to promote the cause of criminal justice by providing for the representation of defendants who are financially unable to obtain an adequate defense.”
